Today we did some final visits and meetings. We went to visit Nancy's orphanage once more to check in on the boys. Then we went to AFCA Village to see those orphanage girls, who lost their dad in the earthquake. We also visited some other children in the area that people in the church sponsor. Please pray for AFCA, they have over 3,000 people and very little help for them.

We are having several meetings as I type, preparing things for the coming months. Tonight we will see Good Samaritan again and sleep there. Tomorrow, it is a 7 hour bus ride from Port-au-Prince to Santo Domingo in the Dominican.

MATT

Please pray:
*No medicine for Pastor Nathan's daughter yet, but she has a few weeks worth and Nancy is working on getting some for her. She'll be going to Haiti next week. Please pray they are able to get a hold of this.

Praises!

Today is a day to praise God as this week of serving in Haiti comes to a close. We Knew God was calling these four guys to assess, serve and love, but we never anticipated the impact this would have on so many. We couldn't have guessed how He would use them to provide for his people. Seeing the picture of people worshipping outside amidst all the rubble, reminded me of the words from
Matt Redman's song, "Blessed be your name"...

Blessed be your name on the road marked with suffering
though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in Lord
still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord...

You give and take away...
My heart will choose to say
Lord Blessed be your name

The Haitians are living this...they still say "Blessed be your name". I wonder how many of us could say the same for ourselves. Their faith continues to amaze me. Their reliance on God again surpasses my understanding.

Answered prayer
*God not only answered our prayers for safety and providing, He blew any of our pleads out of the water

Please Pray for:
*meetings happening today, decisions to be made and tying up loose ends
*God's grace for these guys, it is very difficult to say goodbye to our kids and friends in Haiti under normal circumstances. Today...???
*Safety in travel. The guys along with Margarette, Max Jr., and Berothie Cazeau will be traveling 8 hours by bus tomorrow morning into Santo Domingo, then flying back here on Tuesday.

By the way, take notice in the picture of the speaker system we took Pastor Nathan in Oct and the chairs they are sitting on we had shipped and delivered in July. They survived the quake:)

Delivery Day!

We need to start with talking about last night. We brought a snack to Good Samaritan!! Corn Flakes and milk were a HUGE hit. Chasing them with Oreo Cookies was a bonus! Seeing Floriane eat a whole box of Corn Flakes and then Oreo's and then throw up...not such a bonus.

After we woke up this morning we headed to look at a potential new house for Good Samaritan. The current one will not be able to be fixed to the point of being safe for the kids to continue to live there.

After that we split off. Marv and Doug went back to the UN on a special fact finding mission. Jeff went back to the WFP warehouse and I went with Maragrette to the US Embassy to discuss her mothers expired VISA.

Marv and Doug got the info we needed. Margarette and I got the info we needed. I met Jeff at the warehouse and we loaded up some more supplies. Today then became delivery day.

First, we were able to deliver a good amount of food, tarps and baby products to Troy and Tara for use in their clinic/hospital. They are going to be able to take better care of their patients and send them home with something to eat.

The guys from Love and Grace Boys Home stopped over and we gave them a truck full of food supplies for the boys.

We then took food to Freedom House. It was good to see the girls enjoying the tent that we set up the other day. We were able to load their food depot pretty well. The girls were very grateful and as sweet as always.

We were also able to get food and supplies to Pastor Nathan for his community and to Marv's sponsored family.

This evening Dr. Jude came by and we loaded up 2 pick up trucks full of medicine! He is working at the hospital beside Cite Soleil right now, and they have a big need for medicine. He now will have a nice supply of antibiotics, pain medicines, etc. When we got the medical supplies, we had a hard time thinking about what we would do with them. They are all in spanish. Jude was very excited and he will see that they get to the people in the most need.

As all of this happened today, we also were able to provide some assistance from a distance. We cannot get to our orphanage in Jacmel, Freedom Grace, on this trip. I received word yesterday that they are sleeping outside with no tents. It just so happens, Jeff and I spoke with a lady yesterday who gave us contact information for a man who is providing "Shelter in a Box" systems. We sent an emial, he called me back, and on Monday his group will deliver and set up 2 systems for the girls in Jacmle! These systems each consist of a tent that will sleep 15, blankets, pillows, plates, spoons, forks, cups, small mattresses and some emergency supplies!

Tonight we head back to Good Samaritan again...maybe we will try to teach them s'mores tonight! After another long day's work we need some excitement!!

Jackpot!

So, you saw the picture of food supplies that we had access to. Here is the scoop...

We were linked up with the right guy today on Marv and Doug's venture to the UN compund! He gave them paperwork and sent us to a world food programme warehouse. We were given access to the supplies sent from Mexico and Columbia. No rules, just take anything we want that came from those countires.

So...we have been working in warehouses and trucks all day. We were able to secure enough supplies to equip Troy and Tara to feed their patients for some time. We have also been able to secure some food supplies for all of our orphanages and affiliated ministries.

Tomorrow, we will begin distributing the food supplies to the orphanages, pastors and some families that are a part of our ministry. We will also give some to the refugee community that we have been staying with here.

God, as you know, continues to blow us away. This warehouse is only a few miles from the house of Momma and Poppa. There is a road that connects the warehouse to their street...which is smooth and has no traffic. We have been able to travel with the food supplies virtually out of site of large groups of people. This keeps us from getting mobbed.

Tonight, per our promise, we are headed to sleep over at Good Samaritan (in our own tent). We have NO IDEA what we are in for!!

In poppa's words "we were blessed (today)...we will share the blessings (tomorrow)"

~Matt

Answered prayers:
*all week God has been answering prayers...thank you all so much for partnering with us and with the guys in praying very specific prayers. We have seen God work miracles over and over since the earthquake!

Please Pray for:
*continued protection and guidance.
*the Haitians to see God at work as the guys interact with them and deliver the food and supplies to them.

A shout out to Pat Carr!

Today was a VERY busy day! This morning we went to Pastor Nathan's neighborhood to see what we could do to help out. We put a large tarp between two buildings to make cover across the street for them. We also gave a mosquito net and small tent to his family. We, the blancs, went into his house to see the damage. I have no idea how his wife and kids got out of there. Everything was down. Tomorrow we will hunt for some supplies for his community, including seizure medicine for his daughter, b/c she is running out of it and pharmacies are not running like normal.

After that we went to Freedom House. The girls had made a camp out of the playground that we built in July! We removed that and pitched a large tent, which is enough room for them to all sleep together. They were low on water, so we gave them money for a supply of it. Tomorrow Dave Lock will be back and he will see that their food supply is replenished. The main surrounding wall is down, but the house is ok. They are in good spirits.

We then headed to the US Embassy, our first stop to try to get access to more food. As we walked, I spotted Anderson Cooper speed by in the back of a truck. I called ahead to Jeff, who was walking maybe 30 feet ahead of me, and he started to jog after the truck! When Anderson's car stopped in traffic, Jeff ran and caught up to him! Anderson and his team got out and we talked with them for about 15 minutes. He was extremely generous, getting some contact information from his people for us. He was genuinly interested in what we do and he was very helpful.

From one of his ideas, Jeff and I went to the airport while Doug and Marv went back to the UN. Jeff and I got a US military escort through the airport, across the tarmac and through the military base to find the University of Miami Hospital. We were given some direction of where to go for food from the people there. As it turns out, the info they gave us was the same as where Marv and Doug already were! Those two, and Schneider, scored a big load of food for us to pick up tomorrow. Two tons of food!!! We think that this is due to the email from Congressman Platts office that Pat sent. One of the UN folks fund them and asked if our people had been sending down emails. When they said yes, he took them in and set them up with the food! There is also potential, from Marv and Doug's contact, for more food beyond this first load!

Later, we spoke with Troy and Tara who have a full clinic and no food for their patients. We took some of our stock from the other day and delivered it to their clinic so that their patients can eat.

Tonight, after an extremely long day, we went to Good Sam and spent a few hours with the kids. It was a good ending to a long day's work!

Tomorrow, we focus on food supplies and try to take care of Good Sam, Pastor Nathan, the Livesay's clinic and others.

~Matt

Answered prayers:
*Some very practical supplies and shelter were established for Pastor Nathan
*Unknown needs to be met...
1.Pastor Nathan's daughter (he has triplets) needs medicine for seizures and is almost out. We found out here in the US and I was able to contact the guys while they were meeting with him. They will try to get the medicine while there.
2. Troy and Tara Livesay are involved in a medical clinic turned hospital. Food being delivered today and tomorrow for them to feed the patients.(this one doubles as relief being brought to areas of need)

Please pray for:
*strength for Marv, Matt, Doug, and Jeff...they worked really hard today to make connections, decisions, and there is more of that to come.
*wisdom and discernment in decisions, they'll be looking at a possible new home for Good Samaritan Orphanage and to work more with Pastor Nathan and his situation
*God to continue to show up in big ways!

thanks for your specific prayers, they guys are really feeling them and seeing God work in many ways!

God provides

I should have known. My God reminded me today that He is in control. He loves these kids so much more than I do. The orphanage I was most concerned about, I just couldn't kick the thoughts that were running through my mind about the kids at Leogane before we got news that they were ok. The past few days were filled with thoughts of their fear, their hunger, their thirst, their need, not just of the Leogane kids, but all the kids we minister to and care for. But our God provides.

Today the guys traveled to Leogane. They drove through Port-au-Prince. Jeff said it is real bad. But, they got to Leogane to find that a UN soldier camp had brought them lots of food and supplies already and had lumber there to build a shelter. The guys set up a tent for the pastor. Margarette and some of the older girls from Good Samaritan Orphanage went with some clean clothes and hygiene supplies and cleaned up the kids and did the girl's hair. Margarette didn't like those kids being so dirty last week when she visited:) They have supplies for now, but a long road to recovery is ahead of them. The pastor is basically starting over with no building for these 90 children and his family.
The men traveled to the Petion-ville orphanage to find 50 bags of rice and other supplies. Relief has found them. The kids seemed to be doing pretty well for now. We don't know how long relief will come.
Answered prayers today:
*safe travels
*a good day, despite seeing the city so devastated
*how could the kids at Leogane not feel loved by Margarette and the girls cleaning them up and doing their hair?

Yesterday one of the stops was to visit Pastor Nathan. When he started his church, he had turned the bottom floor of his home into his church. In July '09, we delivered chairs to his church (they were sent in the sea crate). We found out afterward how thankful he was that God provided the chairs because every Sunday a group of men came to the church, prayed they would get enough chairs, then went out into the community and asked to borrow chairs. They returned them every Sunday afternoon. Very humbling. In Oct '09 we took him a portable sound system because we found out that he rented one every week so the people who couldn't fit inside his church, but stood in the street, could hear him preach the gospel. Very humbling. Again, he gave God praise for providing. This was so important to him to be able to preach. When the earthquake hit, Pastor Nathan's home was destroyed. The church has sustained damage. Now he and his family sleep outside in the street. Sunday before Jeff left, Pastor Nathan called to see if Jeff could bring him a megaphone because he needed to be able to preach the gospel. He lost his home, he is sleeping on the ground on a floor mat and cardboard beside his building, and he just wants to share Christ with people. Very humbling.
Tomorrow, the agenda is:
*getting pastor Nathan matresses, pillows, and sheets
*going to the UN to try to get food for Pastor Nathan and his congregation
*visiting Freedom House Orphanage, setting up tent shelter

Prayers for tomorrow:
*discernment in helping Pastor Nathan
*If there is a need they should help meet, that God would reveal it
*Relief to be brought to areas that still need it

Today, we are humbled...God provides

Answered prayer

If I were to try to keep track of answered prayer over the course of this week, I know I'd be missing a ton. I know the guys are praying and many of you are praying for specific things that we may not have even thought of. So I'm going to keep track of answered prayer from the ones I have listed in previous posts. Please make comments/suggestions as to what you are praying for specifically.
So for today's answered prayer:
*the guys had no trouble getting across the border as a matter of fact, they were in Port-au-Prince much earlier than I anticipated
*safety in travel...they put on a ton of miles/time in travel yesterday and this morning
*a good day, enjoyed time with Good Samaritan kids

Today Jeff, Marv, Doug, and Matt had a reunion with our Good Samaritan angels as many call them. Those kids are so special. They are doing really well!
The guys were able to set up tents and tarps at Good Samaritan to provide some much needed shelter.
They also set some things up for Max and Margarette (pappa and momma) and a few neigbors of theirs.
Doug and Jeff made a trip to the airport and made a very successful contact with the UN. They were able to get 500 rations of food and a skid of water!
This evening, they are spending an enjoyable evening with the Good Samaritan kids. I wonder if they are getting pedicures???

Tomorrow may be a bit of a harder day emotionally for the guys. They will be traveling to Leogane to see the orphanage there. While making the hour and a half drive there, they will surely pass a lot of destruction. We knew the building in Leogane was majorly damaged, but Matt's description tonight after seeing a photo taken last week was that it is totally down to the ground. This was a big building. In Leogane 90% of the buildings were destroyed. A reminder that God has a plan for these children and there is a reason He put them in our path and kept them safe. The kids don't have any clothes to change into because their extra clothing are buried in the building. The guys will spend time setting up a tarp system and Margarette and some of the older Good Samarian girls will be bathing the 90 or so kids (can you picture that?). I'm not sure what, if anything, they will do about the dirty clothes the kids are wearing. If it were up to our son, he would shower then put the same clothes back on anyway.
This is the orphanage that we have been helping with food, medical treatment, and just spending time with kids who desperately need to be loved and held. They have won our hearts and we know they already were in great need. I can't imagine seeing what the guys will see tomorrow.

Please pray for:
*safe travel
*again, God's presence to be evident as they experience devastation
*That the kids at Leogane would feel totally loved
*God to show the Guys a need they should fulfill that they aren't aware of yet

thanks for your prayers!
~Deb

Reunion at Good Samaritan!

The guys made it into Port-au-Prince!
They are at Good Samaritan this morning...what a reunion that must have been!

We know God is very real and present, there are no coincidences here.

"ALL IS WELL"

The guys made it safely into Santo Domingo. They traveled to Jimani to meet Max. Everything so far has gone as scheduled. They are camping right at the border in Jimani. The border closes at 6pm and they arrived at 7pm. The border opens again at 8am, I'm sure they'll be up much before that(I don't know if roosters start crowing at 4am in the DR too or if they have some other form of alarm clock). They'll be ready to head in to Haiti as soon as the border opens up.
Marv's famous words..."ALL IS WELL"

Please pray for:
*restful sleep, they have been traveling since midnight
*smooth transition across the border
*safety in travel
*them to feel the presence of God as they begin to see up close and personal, the destruction and the living condition of so many

God gave us a mission...humbly we go!

It has been made clear to me that this mission we are on in Haiti is a team effort. We are not alone. So many of you have joined with us. You have chosen to take part in this fight. Whether by prayer, encouragement, giving monetarily, donating supplies, going on trips, or sponsoring children, this church and community have stepped up and have shown that giving of oneself to help those in need is important.
We don't know why He chose us...but He gave us a mission...so humbly we go! We commit ourselves to follow His leading. We seek His discernment. We trust His guidance. We ask for His protection.

Tonight we send Jeff, Doug T., Matt, and Marv off to be a big part of this mission. We commit them into God's care as they go and assess the damage and the needs of the orphanages, the schools, the church and many friends we are connected with in Haiti. We know they will be the hands and feet of Christ as they go and minister to those in need.

Tentative itinerary:
Mon - Flight into Dominican Republic
Travel to Jimani (boardering town between the DR and Haiti)
Tue - travel from Jimani into Haiti after buying a large supply of food and water

Wed - Sun
Will be filled with visiting orphanages/delivering needed supplies, checking on the kids' schools and Fan Fan's school, supporting Pastor Nathan and his church/community, setting up temporary shelter for as many as possible, looking for a new home for Good Samaritan Orphanage kids, trying to make contact with relief agencies to set up ongoing relief for the orphanages.

orphanage supplies for...
Good Samaritan Orphanage
Leogane Orphanage
Freedom House orphanage
Petion-ville Orphanage
Love and Grace Boys' Home:

hygiene supplies, first aid items, water, food, gas, tents/tarps to provide temporary shelter from sun and rain.

Join with me as I pray for the guys' safety, for them to have God's discernment, for them to see needs that are still unknown, for them to minister to those they come in contact with.

thanks for joining with us!

Unbelievable

Momma Cazeau (the mother of the Good Samaritan) made the three hour drive to Leogane today to check on a orphanage there that we having been helping with food, supplies, and medical care over the past six months. Her findings were that all the kids were alive. The building that housed all 100 children is completely destroyed. The pastor and father of the orphanage told her that he sent all the kids outside to play about 15 minutes before the quake. They do have some food and their well is still functioning. Everyone is sleeping outside with no cover.

I have no words to express my thankfulness to God for His protection over all of our 250 plus children in our orphanages and those we are affiliated with. Now it's our turn to be the hands and feet of Jesus and carry out our mission to help them all with their short and long term relief and stability.

Pray for Leogane!!!

I just had a long conversation with the Max and Margarette (the parents of Good Samaritan in Port-au-Prince) tonight. After asking them a lot of questions of what they need us to bring them when we head down next Monday, they told me that they are going to Leogane on Friday to check in on an orphanage that our ministry has been helping with food, medical care, and supplies over the past six months.

Margarette along with a number of the Good Samaritan children came with us to minister and help care for these ninety plus beautiful kids. It was amazing to see orphans serving other orphans.

When I thanked Max and Margarette for checking in on these kids and the orphanage in Leogane for us they replied, "It is our mission, this is why God let us live." Please keep them in your prayers as they make the long and dangerous journey to Leogane on Fri. and may God have mercy on their findings.

To steal a quote from Matt, "Rock on Momma and Poppa!!!"

update

Fan Fan and family are fine!
Amadou is fine!

Reason enough to praise

Today, as I entered the auditorium at church and music began to play, the words moved in me in a very different way. One of the songs we did was called "You'll Come". The words resonated with in me..."spirit rain, let your mercy fall as you respond to us. Spirit Rain, flood into our thirsty hearts again." I was not asking God to fill me, but to fill our friends in Haiti. My prayer was that our friends in Haiti would feel God's presence today and find reason to praise.

How is it the Haitians can be thankful for anything right now? How do they find reason to praise? How do they look to God and say "I know you love me"?
We know many lives were saved. Is life alone enough? Their homes are either destroyed, unsafe, or can't be entered until tested. All of their possessions are gone. For many, they have no money or source of income. For most, food and water are hard to come by even if there is some money.

Is there hope for today? Is there reason to praise God?

I say yes.

In the past, I have seen the faith of the Christians in Haiti. I have witnessed people who have nothing in our eyes raise their hands praising God. We have Haitian friends who didn't know how they would eat or feed their kids, but trusted completely in God to take care of them, so they praised Him.

I know that today, there is hope. Hope that whatever the circumstances, God's spirit is felt in a very real way in Haiti.

I know that some of our Haitian friends were worshipping in whatever way they could today because their faith is in the living God, rather than in material possessions.

Reason enough to praise.

More News!!!

Just received a call from Miami. Pastor Nathan was in Miami getting medical treatment when the Quake hit, but his family was in Haiti. After not hearing anything for days, he learned that his family is ok and he is flying out of Miami and into Santo Domingo later today, which is followed by a 10 plus hour drive to reach his family. Once he is reunited with his family in Port-au-Prince, our contact in Miami will let us know. Please continue to pray for Pastor Nathan's health and travels.

Always Enough

We have heard so much good news just since Wednesday night. We praise God that so many of the kids we have ministered to are alive. Many of the adults we have worked along side survived. We have heard of the loss of life of one we knew and who will be greatly missed. The little girls who were orphaned at one time then given a home and a family have lost their father. We can't imagine their emotional trauma. We have seen the death toll rise, some never even named, some whose family never got to say goodbye to. We know many have survived but lost their homes. We still wait to hear from some very dear to us.We hope and we wait.

We celebrate with many today whose lives have been spared.
We mourn with those that lost loved ones or that have been orphaned or left homeless.
We hope with those that can't find their loved ones.
We cling to what we know...Lord you are enough.

Casting Crowns "Always Enough"
In the dry and weary Land,
Lord you are the rain
In the sea of shattered ones,
your love comes rushing in
You hold the world within your hands
You see each tear that falls
through every fire and every storm
You're always enough
Your love is peace to the broken
faith for the widow
hope for the orphan
strength for the weak
Your love is the anthem of nations, rings out through the ages
and you're always enough for me
Today I cling to what I know is true for us and for what is true for the Haitians...Lord You are enough. I am on my knees today praying for those who celebrate, for those who mourn, for those who hope, for those who rescue, for those who bury, for those who treat, and for those who minister. Lord you are enough.

The Latest!!!

Per Partners With Haiti:

Contact made with Pastor Martinez this evening at 8:15 PM:

- He and Emma are okay

- Maxime, one of our regular team drivers, and his family are ok

- All of the girls, staff of Freedom House and the orphanage bldg. are ok and accounted for.

- AFCA Orphanage girls are ok and accounted for.

- There is a sea of people at AFCA Village, many have come there for a refuge.

We have some sad news to relay, per PWH and the call with Martinez, Pastor Raymond, the father of thr 20 girls at AFCA orphanage and was killed during the earthquake. We have no more details at this time.

Martinez parting words "Haiti is devastated, Haiti is devastated...everything has broken, there is nothing left...we are in need of everything...we are devastated..."

As per Dave Locke - "Schneider and family is OK"

Thoughts from Jeff, Deb and the Team:

For those that did not know Pastor Raymond, he was a man of great faith, love for God and love for people. He always welcomed us with open arms and his gentle spirit was always present. Especially when he walked through the gates of AFCA orphanage and all the girls drop whatever they were doing and all you would hear is "Poppa, Poppa!!!" They they would run to him with excitement as he would open his arms wide to greet his girls with a big smile and a loving embrace. Please keep his wife and the girls of AFCA Orphanage in your prayers in this time of desperation. And Poppa "Nou Renmen ou" (We love you) and you will be greatly missed.

New Update from Jacmel

This is a copy of the e-mail that Matt Reichard (a member on our board) received from the Pastor that runs the orphanage that we are affiliated with in Jacmel, Haiti.

"We in the family and the girls in orphanage are well thanks to God. We are not able to count the deaths yet. The buildings collapsed and we still can not estimate the damage. We have been out with the girls at the airport to sleep at night. They are all fine thanks to God. We can not approach the building yet. But it does not collapse.Give the news to the sponsors for us. They all alive. My living house is broken. we have no room upstairs now. The school stands just for the glory of the Lord. Everybody is sleeping in the court yard and some in the streets. My daughter and my son were in the house and the Lord was with them and protected them safely."

Pray with us in Jacmel.Pastor Abraham

I have continue to try to call our other contacts with no success. When we know anything, so will you. Bondye Beni

Haiti update

As of this morning;

*Nancy was at Beloved Boys Home (her new orphanage) and everyone there is ok

*Pastor Nathan is in Miami, but has been unable to contact his wife and kids

*All kids at Petionville Orphanage are alive. No word on injuries or structure

* just to clarify (the news clips edited some important info)...We don't know the condition of the Good Samaritan kids, building or Max and Margarette. The only info we had gotten was right after the initial quake and aftershock. There have been many aftershocks even throughout the day yesterday and last night, some very strong.

How you can help!!! Earthquake - Haiti

We are extremely encouraged by the overwhelming response to help the people of Haiti during this time of national crisis. From the first moments we heard about the earthquake and countless times since, people have approached members of the Haiti Ministry Leadership Team of Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church with questions of how they can get involved in relief efforts. We will be sending three or four people from our board down to Haiti on January 25th. Once there they will be assessing the damage and needs of our orphanages and affiliated ministries. Upon their return on January 29th, we will immediately come up with a strategic plan of how we are best going to use our resources to benefit the short and long term relief effort of our orphanages and affiliated ministries. Our ministry, in partnership with CBIC, has set up an account where monetary donations can be sent. 100% of donations will be used for necessary relief for our sponsored orphanages and affiliated orphanages, schools, and churches. Thank you for partnering with us in helping the Haitians recover from this tragedy.

Tax-deductible donations can be made payable to:
Carlisle Brethren In Christ Church
on memo line: Haiti ministry/quake
